The Acoustic Fidelity Mastering Department undertakes technical mastering, remastering and archival transfer according to a non-cosmetic intervention criterion, without imposing an arbitrary sonic character.

The work is directed towards the analysis and, where technically practicable, the containment of deficits, alterations or discontinuities present in recorded material and attributable to capture, transfer, conversion, processing or the physical condition of the medium.

The objective is not to make the content generically ‘more effective’, more spectacular or more contemporary, but to prepare a master that is technically coherent with the information actually available in the source material, the documentable conditions of the recording and the intended final destination.

Mastering cannot reconstruct information that is neither present in, nor sufficiently inferable from, the available material. Every intervention must therefore distinguish the recovery or control of a technically characterisable deviation from the arbitrary generation of absent content.

Operational reference and methodological continuity

In stereophonic reproduction, the Theory of Pattern Conservation takes a correctly produced and finalised stereophonic recording as its operational reference.

Mastering belongs to an earlier stage: it contributes to the formation of the master which, once finalised, will become the reference recording. For this reason, the criteria of the theory are not transferred automatically to mastering as though material still under preparation already constituted the definitive reference.

In mastering, the operational reference is formed by the available source material, the structure that remains technically legible within it, information concerning capture or production where available, and the stated objectives of the project.

The intervention therefore aims to preserve and render legible the relationships already present in the material, containing as far as practicable unintended alterations that may compromise balance, temporal continuity, dynamic articulation, spatial organisation or intelligibility.

This approach has methodological continuity with the 'AURORA' technical-scientific framework: attention to structural relationships, distinction between information and contributions introduced by the chain itself, control of operating conditions, and refusal to assign evidential value to any single isolated metric.

Such continuity does not imply that the Theory of Pattern Conservation is formally extended to the mastering process beyond its declared domain. Mastering remains a process of forming and finalising the recording, with its own criteria and responsibilities.

Scope of intervention

Depending on the material and project conditions, the activity may include:

  • technical mastering of new recordings
  • treatment of recordings affected by capture, transfer or conversion deficiencies
  • technical remastering of releases and historical recordings
  • technical recovery of sound archives
  • transfer and preparation of material intended for publication, reissue or preservation
  • technical adaptation of recorded content to different media or final delivery formats

Each intervention is defined case by case according to the actual condition of the material, the information available and the agreed technical objectives.

Working criteria

Where pertinent, the analysis may address:

  • unintended alterations introduced during capture or subsequent transfers
  • loss of legibility in components or relationships still present in the material
  • spectral or dynamic imbalances attributable to the original chain
  • instability, noise, spurious components or conversion artefacts
  • temporal or dynamic discontinuities
  • compromised interchannel coherence and spatial organisation
  • effects arising from ageing or the physical condition of the medium, where applicable

The presence of a phenomenon does not automatically determine a need for correction. Intervention is assessed according to its magnitude, causal attribution, reversibility, the risk of introducing new alterations and its relevance to the final result.

The criterion is not to obtain a ‘better sound’ in an indeterminate sense, but a master that is technically more coherent with the content actually available and with its intended function.

Supporting technical data

Where available, information concerning the conditions of the original capture can increase analytical precision and reduce reliance on unverifiable inference.

Useful data may include:

  • dimensions and characteristics of the recording environment
  • type, number and configuration of the microphones employed
  • polar patterns used
  • microphone distances and positioning criteria relative to performers or sources
  • make and model of the mixer or preamplification stages, where known
  • make and model of the A/D converter, where applicable
  • any use of dither, including the type employed
  • photographs, diagrams or reliable indications concerning source disposition during capture
  • information concerning subsequent transfers, conversions or processing
  • any other data useful in reconstructing the technical context of the material

The availability of these elements is not invariably a prerequisite for intervention. Where present, however, they make it possible to formulate more tightly bounded hypotheses, distinguish more clearly between possible causes of impairment, and limit treatments based on arbitrary reconstruction.

Remastering of historical recordings

Acoustic Fidelity also undertakes technical remastering of historical recordings and archival material.

Intervention is based on analysis of the material supplied, not on aesthetic modernisation. The objective is to identify, where possible, technically characterisable deficits or alterations that can be contained without arbitrarily changing the identity of the recorded document.

Depending on the case, evaluation may address noise, instability, opacity, imbalance, compression, limitations of the original chain, deterioration of the medium, loss of interchannel coherence or other recognisable impairments.

Where the material permits, treatment may improve the legibility of information already present, the stability of the stereophonic image, dynamic continuity and the differentiation of ambient contributions encoded in the recording.

The recovery of absent information, or the reconstruction of a hypothetical original event that can no longer be documented, is not adopted as an objective.

The spectral response, dynamics and overall character of the document must be assessed in relation to its period, capture technique, medium and recording chain, avoiding the application of contemporary criteria as a universal aesthetic model.

Archival transfer

In the transfer of archival material, the priority is to obtain a technically documentable representation of the content available on the source medium, limiting as far as practicable alterations introduced by the replay, conversion and acquisition chain.

The choice of any subsequent treatment must remain distinct from the transfer operation. Where appropriate, the transferred material may form the basis of a later restoration or technical-remastering stage.

Archival transfer is therefore not conceived as a reinterpretation of the document, but as a technical stage in which process traceability and the distinction between acquired content and subsequent treatment are of particular importance.

Expertise and method

The activity draws on expertise developed over time in the following areas:

  • sound recording
  • analogue and digital mastering
  • archival transfer
  • technical treatment of historical media
  • analysis of impairments introduced by recording and conversion chains
  • critical evaluation of the relationships between source material, master formation and the final result

These competencies are not used to construct a uniform and recognisable sonic character, but to define interventions proportionate to the problems actually identifiable in the material.

What the service does not pursue

The service is not intended to:

  • artificially colour the material
  • arbitrarily homogenise different recordings
  • systematically make the sonic content more spectacular
  • replace the character of the recording with a treatment aesthetic
  • reconstruct information not present in the material as though it were documented
  • apply standardised processes irrespective of content and technical conditions

Where an intervention cannot be justified by the available material, or carries a greater risk than the expected benefit, the technically correct choice may be not to apply it.

Expected technical outcome

A correctly conceived treatment should not be recognisable through the presence of arbitrarily added sonic characteristics.

The expected result is a master in which information already available in the material is represented with greater legibility and coherence, within the limits imposed by the source and the conditions of the process.

Focus, articulation, dynamic continuity, balance and intelligibility are not treated as qualities to be artificially ‘created’. They may instead become more clearly available when deficits or unintended contributions that previously limited their legibility are contained.

The master should not merely appear transformed. It should be technically more coherent with the material from which it was formed and with the declared objectives of the project.
