0. NARRATIVE FORMULATION

“The perceived path of a source or an element of the scene through reproduced space.”

1. DEFINITION

A virtual trajectory is the evolution over time of the position, distance or extent attributed to a virtual source or an element of the scene, reconstructed through variations in interchannel, spectral, dynamic, spatial and binaural cues.

2. POSITION WITHIN THE THEORY*

It may be intentionally encoded in the mix, constructed through processing or algorithmic generation, or derive from captured movement. The chain may preserve, deform, translate or destabilise it. Assessment requires a known reference or a controlled comparison.

A plausible trajectory appears continuous and independent of the loudspeakers. A spectacular trajectory that differs from the reference encoding is not necessarily more faithful. Controlled spatial encodings are particularly useful for comparison.

Tests may require the indication of position, direction, continuity and point of passage. Posture, listening position, level and learning must be controlled. Interchannel and binaural measurements may connect perception to the available cues.
