0. NARRATIVE FORMULATION

1. DEFINITION

Unity of the event is the perceptual condition in which apparent material quality, gesture, dynamics, source, distance, space, movement and continuity are integrated without dominant contradictions into a coherent representation.

2. POSITION WITHIN THE THEORY*

It does not imply identity with a possible source acoustic event considered in its physical entirety, nor the absence of every artefact. It is a condition of plausibility with respect to the pattern encoded in the recording. It may be compromised by different deviations and cannot be reduced to a single parameter or to a rigid hierarchy.

When unity is high, the listener may follow the event without perceiving elements as disjointed or artificially superimposed. When it diminishes, matter, position, encoded environment or dynamics may appear separate.

Assessment requires specific perceptual tasks and pertinent descriptors. A global sensation of coherence is useful but vulnerable to expectation and preference. Blind comparisons and known manipulations help characterise the phenomenon.
