0. NARRATIVE FORMULATION

“When the system no longer imposes its own presence, what remains is the event as encoded in the recording.”

1. DEFINITION

Absence of the system is the culminating phenomenological condition in which, under admissible verification conditions and within its domain of validity, the stereophonic sound-reproduction system no longer emerges as a perceptually recognisable presence superimposed upon the content of the recording.

This means that the chain neither introduces nor subtracts, to a structurally relevant extent, components or relationships capable of compromising the reference pattern as encoded in the recording adopted as the reference. The dominant perceptual identity therefore remains that of the sound programme, not that of the system reproducing it.

2. POSITION WITHIN THE THEORY*

Absence of the system does not indicate its physical disappearance, nor absolute neutrality independent of operating conditions. Every real system continues to transform energy, transfer signals, interact with the load, radiate an acoustic field and operate within defined limits.

Within the framework of the theory, the expression indicates that the deviations introduced by the chain remain, within the domain investigated, insufficient to produce structurally relevant subtractions, additions, deformations or discontinuities capable of making the system’s own sonic character perceptually dominant or of compromising the coherent reconstruction of the encoded event.

Absence of the system therefore represents the most advanced perceptual outcome compatible with pattern conservation, but does not, in isolation, constitute experimental evidence that conservation has actually been achieved.

As the system approaches its own perceptual absence, different recordings retain different identities. Apparent matter, gesture, dynamics, distance, space, scale and continuity of the event change, while no dominant and constant characterisation attributable to the chain persists.

The listener no longer perceives the system as a recognisable interpreter of the content, but as the means through which the pattern encoded in the recording is made available.

Expressions such as “the system disappears”, “the loudspeakers disappear” or “only the recording remains” describe this phenomenological condition. They must not be understood as assertions of absolute physical transparency.

5. MEASUREMENT, EVIDENCE AND LIMITS

Absence of the system cannot be inferred from a single impression, from one particularly favourable recording or from soundstage width alone.

The non-perceptibility of the system constitutes a highly significant outcome, but demonstration of pattern conservation still requires evidence proportionate to the conclusion.

Individual components, interconnections, wiring, power supplies, electronics, sound-radiation systems and their interactions are considered in relation to a single objective: preventing the chain from removing information present in the recording or introducing intrinsic contributions sufficiently significant to alter its pattern.

'AURORA' pursues this objective coherently throughout the complete system and does not seek a sonic character of its own to superimpose upon recordings. It seeks the condition in which each recording can manifest its own identity and the reproduction system progressively reduces its own presence until it no longer constitutes the perceptual subject of listening, but only the means.

7. OPERATIONAL SUMMARY

Absence of the system = the culminating condition in which, under admissible conditions and within the domain of validity, the sound-reproduction chain neither introduces nor subtracts structurally relevant relationships capable of compromising the reference pattern, leaving the identity of the event encoded in the recording perceptually dominant and enabling its reconstruction as a physically plausible unity.
