0. NARRATIVE FORMULATION

“A structure stores and returns energy with a selective response and a decay of its own.”

1. DEFINITION

Within the Lexicon, structural resonance denotes an amplified and selective response of a mechanical or electromechanical system near its natural modes, accompanied by characteristic storage, phase and decay. The term does not replace the distinct theoretical categories of electrical, magnetic, mechanical or acoustic resonance.

2. POSITION WITHIN THE THEORY*

It may concern chassis, cabinets, supports, diaphragms, tonearms, components and couplings. Not every resonance is undesirable: some contribute intentionally to the function of the transducer or acoustic loading. It becomes degrading when it introduces uncontrolled contributions of its own or alters the reference representation beyond tolerance. Resonances intrinsic to the listening environment belong to the boundary conditions and must be distinguished from resonances intrinsic to the system.

It may be perceived as colouration, tails, localisation of the cabinet, emphasis or loss of articulation. Merely detecting a vibration does not demonstrate that it reaches an acoustically or electrically relevant level.

5. MEASUREMENT, EVIDENCE AND LIMITS

Measurements include modal analysis, accelerometry, vibrometry, frequency response, decays and comparison of transfer to the output. Causality must be verified by modifying the mode or path in a controlled manner.

Within the 'AURORA' framework, resonances and constraints are addressed through geometry, materials, damping, functional separation and installation. The objective is not to render every structure absolutely inert, but to control its modes and couplings in relation to function.

7. OPERATIONAL SUMMARY

Structural resonance = modal response involving storage and release; its relevance depends on the path by which it enters the resulting representation.
