0. NARRATIVE FORMULATION

1. DEFINITION

Structural discontinuity is a deviation or transformation that interrupts, alters or renders insufficient the correspondence between the reference representation and the resulting representation with respect to pertinent relations.

2. POSITION WITHIN THE THEORY*

It may be local or distributed, linear or non-linear, static or history-dependent. Not every physical difference constitutes a relevant discontinuity. Qualification requires a tolerance, causal attribution, direction relative to the reference and an investigated domain. When dominant and sufficiently characterised, it may support a conclusion of pattern degradation.

Discontinuity may manifest as loss of unity, apparent material quality, source stability, depth or continuity of the perceived generating gesture. Effects may be selective and gradual; the term must not be used as a synonym for any audible imperfection.

Verification requires comparison with the reference and control of alternative explanations. If a perceptual difference is robust but its correlate is unknown, one may conclude non-equivalence, but not yet a directionally characterised discontinuity.

Structural discontinuity = pertinent deviation beyond tolerance that compromises the isomorphic relation within the investigated domain and whose attribution requires an admissible, causally controlled test.
