0. NARRATIVE FORMULATION

“Compatible phase relations among components that must contribute to the same event.”

1. DEFINITION

Phase coherence describes the stability and compatibility of phase relations among spectral components, paths, transducers or channels within the domain and conditions considered.

2. POSITION WITHIN THE THEORY*

A non-zero phase or phase rotation does not automatically constitute degradation. Intentional transformations may introduce phase without altering amplitude, and a common pure delay is compatible with structural isomorphism. Relevance concerns differential variation, dispersion, instability or asymmetry that alters pertinent structural relations.

Phase alterations may contribute to less defined transients, less stable sources or changes in depth, but audibility depends on signal and context. “Correct phase” must not become a generic claim.

5. MEASUREMENT, EVIDENCE AND LIMITS

Measurements include complex response, unwrapped phase, group delay, step response and impulse response. Perceptual tests must control amplitude and overall delay. A measurable phase difference does not automatically imply degradation.

Phase coherence = compatibility of pertinent phase relations, assessed within the declared bandwidth, time, level and conditions.
