0. NARRATIVE FORMULATION

1. DEFINITION

Interchannel coherence is the stability of amplitude, phase, time, spectral, dynamic and noise relations between the channels of stereophonic reproduction.

2. POSITION WITHIN THE THEORY*

Stereophony encodes part of the spatial information through differences and correlations between channels. Fidelity does not require the channels to be identical at the output, but requires differences introduced by the chain not to alter, beyond tolerance, those encoded in the correctly executed stereophonic recording adopted as the reference. Intrinsic crosstalk between paths must be distinguished from the natural acoustic cross-contributions by which each loudspeaker reaches both aural reference points: the latter belong to the stereophonic transformation and to the boundary conditions, and do not automatically constitute degradation.

Loss of interchannel coherence may displace or broaden sources, reduce focus, make a trajectory unstable or alter the width of the scene. The effect depends on the nature of the asymmetry and on the content.

Measurements must compare channels under the same conditions and include level, phase, timing, distortion and load response. Known spatial patterns and blind tests may verify sensitivity to specific asymmetries.
