0. NARRATIVE FORMULATION

“How the transit time of components varies as a function of frequency.”

1. DEFINITION

Group delay is defined as the negative derivative of phase with respect to angular frequency and describes, within the limits of the local interpretation, the delay of the envelope of spectral components.

2. POSITION WITHIN THE THEORY*

It is useful for characterising filters, crossovers, transducers, environmental transformations and chains. It is not a universal measure of temporal quality and may become difficult to interpret in the presence of zeros, non-minimum-phase systems, strong resonances or time-varying behaviour.

3. RELATIONSHIPS AND OPERATING CONDITIONS

4. PERCEPTUAL TRANSLATION

Non-uniform group delay may contribute to less defined attacks, tails or changes in localisation. Not every high value is audible and not every experience of slowness derives from group delay.

5. MEASUREMENT, EVIDENCE AND LIMITS

Measurements require correct phase unwrapping, adequate resolution, windowing and knowledge of the response. Thresholds must be context-specific; directional comparisons require controlled manipulations.

6. TRANSLATION WITHIN THE AURORA Electron Devices® TECHNICAL-SCIENTIFIC FRAMEWORK

Within the 'AURORA' framework, group delay is considered in the design of filters, crossovers, stages, transducers and environmental integration. The choice is not governed by an isolated number, but by coherence among response, phase, dynamics and radiation.

7. OPERATIONAL SUMMARY

Group delay = descriptor of local temporal dispersion, useful but insufficient to represent the entire temporal structure.
