0. NARRATIVE FORMULATION

“The field becomes plausible when the pertinent coherences remain compatible, without a rigid hierarchy valid in every case.”

1. DEFINITION

Field coherence is an interpretative concept within the Lexicon describing the spatio-temporal compatibility of the acoustic pressures produced by the two loudspeakers and transformed by the boundary conditions at the stereophonic reference listening point. Any extension to the listening region constitutes a distinct assessment.

2. POSITION WITHIN THE THEORY*

The Lexicon may organise temporal, spectral, dynamic, interchannel, energetic and spatial coherences as levels of design analysis. The coherence model does not constitute an additional foundational formalism of the theory, does not assume a universal causal sequence and does not establish that one level always takes precedence over the others. Relevance depends on the signal, the deviation, the boundary conditions and the perceptual task.

4. PERCEPTUAL TRANSLATION

A coherent field may be described as stable, continuous, deep or unbound from the loudspeakers. An intentionally diffuse field may be spectacular without representing the pattern encoded in the recording with greater fidelity. Coherence must be referred to the reference content and to the conditions of the test.

5. MEASUREMENT, EVIDENCE AND LIMITS

Measurements require spatial sampling, binaural responses, coherence, ETC and interchannel comparisons. A single index may simplify but cannot replace analysis of the components. Any hierarchy must be a hypothesis to be tested, not an inviolable premise.

Within the 'AURORA' framework, the coherence model is used to coordinate electronics, loudspeakers, cables and installation at the design level. The model guides research and design priorities according to the configuration and the problem, while retaining the common objective of structural stability of the field.

7. OPERATIONAL SUMMARY

Field coherence = interpretative concept of the joint compatibility of acoustic relations; coherence model = flexible design instrument within the Lexicon, not a universal law or new foundational formalism.
