0. NARRATIVE FORMULATION

“Components that should retain a temporal or spatial relation are distributed differently.”

1. DEFINITION

Dispersion is the dependence of phase velocity, delay or propagation on frequency, mode or path, resulting in variation of temporal relations among components.

2. POSITION WITHIN THE THEORY*

It may occur in filters, interconnections and wiring, materials, transducers, crossovers, ducts and the acoustic field. Not every phase rotation is equivalent to structurally relevant dispersion, and not every dispersive system produces a perceptually discriminable degradation. Bandwidth, amplitude, signal, operating conditions and reference must be considered.

It may contribute to less compact transients, reduced focus, altered texture or less stable trajectories. The term “slow” does not by itself identify dispersion and may be confounded with spectral response or decay.

5. MEASUREMENT, EVIDENCE AND LIMITS

Measurements include phase, group delay, impulse response, wavelet and time–frequency analysis, and angular response. Causal attribution requires dispersion to be distinguished from pure delays, resonances and environmental reflections.

Within the 'AURORA' framework, dispersion is considered in the design selection of circuits, filters, geometries, materials, transducers and wiring. The design seeks temporal compatibility among ways and stages without postulating that the absence or presence of any particular component eliminates all dispersion.

Dispersion = differential variation in propagation relations; its relevance is always contextual and measurable.
