0. NARRATIVE FORMULATION

“Local balance between energy arriving directly from the loudspeakers and contributions reflected by the environment.”

1. DEFINITION

The direct-to-diffuse ratio describes, at a defined position, within a defined band and temporal window, the relationship between the direct field and the reflected–diffuse field of the listening environment.

2. POSITION WITHIN THE THEORY*

No universally correct value exists. The ratio depends on directivity, distance, volume, absorption, diffusion, frequency and time. It may influence the legibility of the cues encoded in the recording, but spatial or environmental information acquired or constructed in the master and the contribution of the listening environment perform different roles.

4. PERCEPTUAL TRANSLATION

A favourable ratio may contribute to focus and depth; different ratios may be preferred for near-field listening, monitoring or domestic use. Preference alone does not establish fidelity.

5. MEASUREMENT, EVIDENCE AND LIMITS

Assessment uses ETC, temporal windows, directional measurements, decay and spatial maps. The distinction among direct sound, early reflections and late field must be explicit. A single RT measurement does not describe the ratio at the listening point.

Direct-to-diffuse ratio = local and frequency-dependent parameter, useful for describing loudspeaker–environment interaction without becoming a universal value.
