0. NARRATIVE FORMULATION

“The set of conditions within which acoustic information may be integrated and discriminated by the listener.”

1. DEFINITION

Within this Lexicon, the neuro-perceptual domain describes the sensitivity, integration, masking, adaptation and variability of the human system in relation to the acoustic pressures available at the two aural reference points. It coincides neither with the admissibility prerequisites of the assessment, nor with the controlled boundary conditions, nor with the intrinsic domain of validity of the chain.

2. POSITION WITHIN THE THEORY*

The theory treats the neuro-perceptual system as recipient and operational constraint without proposing a general theory of acoustic perception. Thresholds depend on frequency, duration, level, context, training, individual and task. No single perceptual boundary is valid for every structural relation.

The neuro-perceptual domain helps describe why certain deviations become audible or alter the unity of the event, while others remain non-discriminable in the task considered. Non-discriminability does not demonstrate physical identity.

5. MEASUREMENT, EVIDENCE AND LIMITS

Tests must define population, task, level, duration, randomisation and statistical criteria. A perceptual threshold is local to the protocol. An absence of discriminability may result from low statistical power, an unsuitable task or an insufficiently sensitive stimulus.

'AURORA' regards controlled listening as part of the verification and fine-tuning process, but does not use subjective impression alone as certification. Historical projects, research configurations and installation work are assessed with the aim of making structural information accessible without imposing a universal characterisation of the listener.

7. OPERATIONAL SUMMARY

Neuro-perceptual domain, admissibility of the assessment, boundary conditions and intrinsic domain of validity interact, but remain distinct concepts: the first concerns human integration; the others define, respectively, the validity of the test, the controlled environmental and geometrical conditions, and the system’s operating region.
