0. NARRATIVE FORMULATION

“Information is not total energy, but the way in which energy varies and is organised.”

1. DEFINITION

The structure of modulated energy is the operational description of the organisation of energy variations through which the pattern is represented across the different domains of the chain.

2. POSITION WITHIN THE THEORY*

Pattern and structure of modulated energy do not denote two competing theoretical objects. Total energy, average level or frequency response do not exhaust the structure. Temporal, spectral, dynamic, phase, interchannel, spatial and binaural, statistical and correlational, as well as history-dependent relations determine how energy is modulated, distributed and made available. Physically different representations may retain sufficient structural isomorphism with respect to that organisation.

The structure must be observed through multiple descriptors and representative signals. Two conditions with similar mean energy may differ structurally; two physically different conditions may prove equivalent with respect to the observed set. The conclusion depends on the protocol.
