0. NARRATIVE FORMULATION

“The perception of a source endowed with body is not a substance added by the system, but an outcome of the organisation of cues.”

1. DEFINITION

Within the Lexicon, apparent material quality, also referred to in abbreviated form as matter, is the perceptual attribution of the apparent physical characteristics of the source or event. It arises from the joint integration of spectrum, transients, envelopes, dynamics, harmonic components, the source’s own noise and temporal relations, and does not imply direct or necessarily univocal identification of the actual material composition.

2. POSITION WITHIN THE THEORY*

Matter is not an autonomous physical quantity and does not coincide with greater low-frequency energy, harmonic density or colouration. It is a neuro-perceptual attribution that may emerge from the integration of transients, spectrum, microdynamics, phase, noise, distance, proportion and stability of the apparent source. Correspondences between individual structural relations and matter are not one-to-one.

The listener may describe matter, body, weight, texture or density. These terms are not interchangeable and may be influenced by frequency response or level. A fuller-bodied presentation may be pleasing without representing the apparent material quality encoded in the reference with greater fidelity.

5. MEASUREMENT, EVIDENCE AND LIMITS

Matter requires measurement–perception correlation models that remain local. Tests must control level, spectral response, position and content. Robust discriminability may confirm a difference, but its explanation must be characterised.

'AURORA' treats the intelligibility of apparent material quality as an outcome of coherence among energy, time, transduction and space. Design is therefore not directed towards imparting an aesthetic or sonic character of its own, but towards limiting contributions that may cause the source to be perceived as remote or discontinuous with respect to the properly made stereophonic recording adopted as the reference.

7. OPERATIONAL SUMMARY

Matter = abbreviated form of apparent material quality: a perceptual attribution emerging from the coherence of multiple relations, not a measurement, a directly identified physical substance or implicit equalisation.
