0. NARRATIVE FORMULATION

“Energy released after the instant or window in which it should have contributed to the representation.”

1. DEFINITION

Late energy is the energy component that persists or is made available after the temporal window in which it should have contributed to the representation. It may arise from resonances, storage, ringing, elasticity, reactive circuits or filtering processes intrinsic to the system; reflections and decays within the environment instead belong to the boundary conditions and must be distinguished causally.

2. POSITION WITHIN THE THEORY*

Not all late energy is undesirable: decays and reverberation encoded in the recording form part of the reference. Intrinsic deviation arises when the system adds its own late contributions, displaces existing ones or alters their distribution in a structurally relevant manner. The residual contribution of the listening environment, when the test is admissible, belongs to the controlled boundary conditions and must not be reclassified as an intrinsic system mechanism.

Late contributions may be perceived as tails, veiling, reduced speed, loss of silence between events or reduced focus. The effect depends on level, frequency, duration, correlation and masking.

Verification uses impulse responses, waterfall plots, cumulative spectral decays, burst decay, energy–time analysis and comparisons with the reference. It is essential to distinguish the decays encoded in the recording, intrinsic late energy introduced by electronics, mechanics or the sound-radiation system, and the environmental contribution determined by the boundary conditions.

Late energy = temporally deferred contribution; it becomes intrinsic degradation only when introduced or altered by the system beyond the pertinent tolerances, while the environmental contribution must be assessed separately as a boundary condition.
