0. NARRATIVE FORMULATION

1. DEFINITION

Digital memory is the set of states and storage processes used for readout, buffering, correction, filtering, sample-rate conversion, interpolation and management of the audio stream.

2. POSITION WITHIN THE THEORY*

The presence of digital memory implies neither degradation nor non-determinism. In correctly designed systems, buffers and computation may increase robustness and separate readout timing from conversion timing. Structural relevance concerns errors, non-transparent processes, variable configurations, overflow, data loss, undeclared resampling, or interactions with clocking and power supply. Within foundational verification, active functions that generate, estimate, reconstruct or synthesise structural information not contained in the recording remain excluded; their mere presence does not make the test inadmissible when they are disabled, excluded from the adopted path and documented.

Perceived differences between digital sources cannot be attributed generically to “memory”. They may involve levels, filters, clocking, noise, interfaces, conversion or bias. Perceptual language guides the comparison; it does not identify the mechanism.

5. MEASUREMENT, EVIDENCE AND LIMITS

Verification requires bit-level comparison of data, metadata control, analysis of clocking and analogue output, repeatable configurations and blind tests where pertinent. If data and output prove equivalent within the sensitivity and coverage of the protocol, an invisible digital memory must not be postulated as an ad hoc explanation.

Digital memory = functional state of the process; it is problematic only when it produces verifiable or uncontrolled deviations in the resulting representation.
