0. NARRATIVE FORMULATION

“A finite and declared representation of the relationships observed.”

1. DEFINITION

The structural vector s gathers an ordered set of descriptors selected to represent, within a common space, pertinent aspects of the reference pattern and of the resulting representation.

2. POSITION WITHIN THE THEORY*

The theory distinguishes s_ref, extracted from the pattern encoded in the properly made stereophonic recording adopted as the reference, from s_P, extracted from the resulting binaural acoustic representation at the two aural reference points under the test conditions by means of extraction and normalisation operators that make representations belonging to different domains comparable. The difference Δs = s_P − s_ref expresses the deviations within descriptor space. Membership of Δs in the region Ω_D supports preservation only within the coverage, sensitivity and validity of the model and protocol adopted.

4. PERCEPTUAL TRANSLATION

The vector is not perceived as such by the listener. Instead, it organises the quantities that may contribute to attributions or reconstructions such as stability of the apparent source, apparent material quality, depth, movement or temporal continuity. It is not correct to associate a single component automatically with a single perceptual attribute.

5. MEASUREMENT, EVIDENCE AND LIMITS

The construction of s must be preregistered or otherwise declared before the conclusive analysis. The distance D_s = ||WΔs|| has no evidential force greater than that of the descriptors it synthesises. Threshold, weighting and admissible region require validation and cannot be adjusted after the event to neutralise contrary results.

'AURORA' uses the concept of the structural vector as a framework for integrating different measurements along the chain while keeping the technical datum distinct from the performance conclusion. The formalism guides development and future experimental activity without becoming a universal commercial index.

7. OPERATIONAL SUMMARY

The vector s is a finite map of the problem: useful for comparing representations, insufficient by itself to declare complete conservation of the pattern.
