0. NARRATIVE FORMULATION

“Relationships that must remain recognisable, not values that must necessarily remain identical.”

1. DEFINITION

Structural invariants are physico-informational relationships whose organisation must remain recognisable through the successive representations of the pattern. The term “invariant” does not imply absolute identity, but preservation within tolerances compatible with the domain of validity.

2. POSITION WITHIN THE THEORY*

An invariant is defined with respect to a transformation, a reference and an observation criterion. It may concern time, spectrum, dynamics, phase, interchannel relationships, space and binaural cues, statistics and internal correlations, or dependence on prior history. Its relevance is not universal: it depends on the content, the mechanism under investigation and the function it performs in the reconstruction of the event.

4. PERCEPTUAL TRANSLATION

Loss of recognisability of an invariant may correspond to temporal blurring, instability of the apparent source, reduced articulation, alteration of apparent material quality or trajectory, and diminished unity of the event. The effect depends on context and must not be inferred automatically from the name of the invariant.

5. MEASUREMENT, EVIDENCE AND LIMITS

Invariants are assessed through descriptors, comparative measurements and pertinent perceptual tests. No finite list is universally sufficient. A test that observes only some invariants supports conclusions limited to its own coverage.

Design considers the chain as a whole, because local preservation of one relationship does not automatically compensate for a dominant discontinuity introduced elsewhere.

Structural invariant = a relationship defined with respect to a transformation, preserved within tolerance and observed through pertinent descriptors.
