0. NARRATIVE FORMULATION

“To make the relationships of the pattern observable without confusing the map with the complete phenomenon.”

1. DEFINITION

Structural descriptors are quantities, relationships, functions or indices used to represent observable aspects of the invariants encoded in a properly made stereophonic recording adopted as the reference and of their successive transformations.

2. POSITION WITHIN THE THEORY*

A descriptor is not the invariant itself and does not exhaust the pattern. It is an observation tool constructed to detect, estimate or exclude specific deviations. Its usefulness depends on sensitivity, resolution, robustness, representativeness and validation with respect to the phenomenon under investigation.

4. PERCEPTUAL TRANSLATION

Perceptual language may suggest which classes of descriptor should be investigated, but does not replace their definition. For example, “speed” may refer to several temporal and dynamic phenomena; “silence” may refer to noise, spurious components, decays or masking.

5. MEASUREMENT, EVIDENCE AND LIMITS

Every descriptor must be accompanied by its method of calculation, unit, temporal window, operating conditions and uncertainty. No collection of favourable values automatically demonstrates fidelity. Failure to observe a deviation may result from the inadequacy of the descriptor.

In its design work, 'AURORA' uses conventional descriptors and contextual analyses to assess electrical, digital, magnetic, dielectric, mechanical and acoustic phenomena. The choice of measurements is subordinate to the problem and to the actual behaviour of the chain, not to an abstract ranking of specifications.

7. OPERATIONAL SUMMARY

Structural descriptor = an observable selected to characterise a relationship; its evidential value remains limited to the capability of the method adopted.
