0. NARRATIVE FORMULATION

“The information must be capable of being integrated as a physically coherent event.”

1. DEFINITION

Plausibility criteria are operational neuro-perceptual conditions through which the resulting acoustic information may be integrated into mutually compatible attributions or reconstructions of apparent material quality, perceived generating gesture, dynamics, apparent source, distance, spatial organisation, movement and temporal continuity.

2. POSITION WITHIN THE THEORY*

Plausibility is neither ontological identity with a possible source acoustic event considered in its physical entirety nor mere pleasantness. It refers to the internal coherence of the acoustic representation with respect to the pattern encoded in the properly made stereophonic recording adopted as the reference. The criteria are not assumed to constitute a complete model of perception and are not reduced to a single universal threshold.

Plausibility may be expressed as stability, presence, materiality, intelligibility, depth or continuity. Presence denotes an integrated phenomenological outcome in which multiple attributions are mutually compatible. These attributes may diverge from preference: a brighter, wider or more spectacular sound may be pleasing while remaining less coherent with the reference.

5. MEASUREMENT, EVIDENCE AND LIMITS

The criteria must be investigated through controlled tests and, where possible, connected to physical descriptors. Discriminability demonstrates non-equivalence; directional attribution requires a reference and a sufficiently grounded criterion. Association with a verified physical correlate makes it possible to characterise the responsible mechanism. Where the measurement–perception relationship is not sufficiently characterised, the result remains open or inconclusive.

'AURORA' uses plausibility criteria as objectives for verifying the overall outcome, not as substitutes for measurement. Design choices are directed towards reducing contributions that may render time, dynamics, apparent material quality and space incoherent, while installation establishes the conditions necessary for their legibility.

7. OPERATIONAL SUMMARY

Plausibility = the capacity of the resulting information to support a unitary and physically plausible reconstruction with respect to the pattern encoded in the recording, distinct from aesthetic preference.
