0. NARRATIVE FORMULATION

“Perceived space is a reconstruction based on the cues encoded in the recording and on the conditions of reproduction within the listening environment.”

1. DEFINITION

The neuro-perceptual reconstruction of the space encoded in the recording is the process by which the acoustic pressures at the two aural reference points make temporal, level, spectral and interchannel cues available, which the neuro-perceptual system integrates into a representation of direction, distance, depth, width, movement and spatial continuity.

2. POSITION WITHIN THE THEORY*

The theory does not assume that reproduction ontologically recreates a possible antecedent acoustic environment. It assesses whether the spatial cues acquired or constructed and encoded in the properly made stereophonic recording adopted as the reference remain sufficiently coherent to support a plausible scene. The listening environment is a controlled boundary condition: it contributes to the resulting field and is not treated as an arbitrary variable that the system must invariably compensate for.

A stable reconstruction may be described as wide, deep, focused, enveloping or independent of the loudspeakers. Such expressions describe the experience and do not by themselves demonstrate conformity with the reference. A broad scene is not necessarily more faithful than a compact one if the latter is what the recording encodes.

5. MEASUREMENT, EVIDENCE AND LIMITS

Interchannel measurements, binaural measurements, controlled signals and listening tests may be combined. Individual variability, head movement, room acoustics and loudspeaker directivity must be considered. The attribution of greater fidelity requires knowledge of the spatial content of the reference or a sufficiently grounded comparative criterion.

The objective is not to impose an invariably spectacular scene, but to allow the spatial organisation encoded in each recording to remain legible and differentiated.

Spatial reconstruction = neuro-perceptual integration of the cues encoded in the recording under declared boundary conditions; it is not the physical recreation of an antecedent environment.
