0. NARRATIVE FORMULATION

“The point beyond which the deviation can no longer be regarded as compatible with fidelity within the domain investigated.”

1. DEFINITION

The limit condition of fidelity is not a universal, single and context-independent threshold. It is the operational boundary of the region of admissible deviations defined for a properly made stereophonic recording adopted as the reference, for a specific configuration, for given descriptors and for declared test conditions.

2. POSITION WITHIN THE THEORY

In the formalisation of the theory, the admissible region is denoted by Ω_D. When a structurally relevant, causally attributed and directionally referenced deviation with respect to the reference pattern takes Δs outside Ω_D, degradation may be supported within the domain investigated. Where the sensitivity, coverage or validation of the protocol is insufficient, the result remains inconclusive: apparent crossing of a threshold alone does not authorise a conclusion broader than the available data.

3. RELATIONSHIPS AND OPERATING CONDITIONS

- the limit condition depends on the set of descriptors adopted and the corresponding tolerances

- it may be defined by joint constraints and not solely by independent scalar thresholds

- it does not coincide with an aesthetic threshold, personal preference or the audibility level of a single artefact

- it may be reached through the dominant effect of one deviation or through the interaction of several deviations

- it must be assessed only where the prerequisites and test conditions are admissible

4. PERCEPTUAL TRANSLATION

Exceeding the admissible region may manifest as reduced source stability, loss of continuity of gesture, diminished timbral articulation, alteration of depth or greater perceptual dominance of the system. These effects are not necessarily simultaneous or binary: plausibility may degrade gradually and in a content-dependent manner.

5. MEASUREMENT, EVIDENCE AND LIMITS

The limit condition must be defined before the test through descriptors, tolerances, operating conditions and decision criteria. Perceptual discriminability demonstrates non-equivalence, but does not by itself establish which condition has exceeded the fidelity limit. A defined reference, a pertinent physical correlate and adequate controls are required for a directional conclusion. No isolated metric universally identifies the boundary of fidelity.

6. TRANSLATION WITHIN THE AURORA Electron Devices® TECHNICAL-SCIENTIFIC FRAMEWORK

In the design of apparatus, sound-radiation systems and cables consistent with the 'AURORA' technical-scientific framework, declared, differentiated and progressive control objectives and operating margins are pursued in order to contain structurally relevant deviations under the intended conditions. The presence of such objectives and margins does not, however, make the limit condition universal: behaviour must be referred to the complete chain, the load, installation, environment and listening position.

7. OPERATIONAL SUMMARY

Limit condition of fidelity = the operational boundary between deviations still compatible with a sufficiently supported conclusion of pattern preservation and deviations which, when verified and directionally attributed, support a conclusion of degradation.
